What is balletRADICAL?

balletRADICAL was created as a reaction to my frustrations with ballet classes as a queer adult who didn’t fit the standard idea of a ballet dancer. It can be difficult to find classes that will take adult dancers seriously in their desire to learn ballet technique in a structured and thorough way. Additionally, the very gendered roles present in both dance performances and industry as well as the traditional idea of what “a ballet body” is can make starting out learning ballet intimidating.

balletRADICAL classes are focused on teaching technique slowly and progressively all the way from the very fundamentals. Our classes are specifically and thoughtfully designed to be an inclusive and accessible space for all genders and body types.

In addition to classes, balletRADICAL has run a number of social events as well, such as picnics and ballet screenings with short talks about how we can look at ballet from a queer, inclusive perspective (with snacks).

balletRADICAL is committed to building a queer-inclusive community. We explicitly welcome trans, non-binary and gender diverse people, as well as asexual, aromantic, and other a-spec people as members of this community.

We acknowledge the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the lands on which we gather and pay our respects to Indigenous Elders past and present. Dance and other performing arts are affected by colonisation. We recognise that First Nations people have many rich dance traditions that have a been a part of their cultures for thousands of years, but these are often overlooked by a colonial focus on western art forms.
