FAQ

To attend class do I have to be queer/a person of colour/body diverse etc?
You do not have to identify as any of these to come to class, all who respect that this is explicitly an inclusive space are welcome!

What level of fitness is required to start?
The Absolute Beginner class is very gentle and does not assume any prior dance experience or fitness training. However, please keep in mind that it is still a physical activity class that runs for 90 minutes and you will need to stand up for the majority of this time.

I have three left feet and have never danced before, can I take class?
Absolutely! No experience in dance is necessary as we are working from the absolute basic techniques and it’s a great way to improve coordination and body awareness. I recommend beginning with the Sunday morning class as it is the slowest and most technique focused.

I can't make/would prefer not to do in person class, is online possible?

Yes, all classes are available to be streamed online upon request and you will receive feedback live if you have your video on. Please get in touch to arrange an online option.

If I'm not an absolute beginner is this class right for me?
You are more than welcome to do either class, on Sunday the focus is quite technical and so even if you have danced elsewhere it may still appeal to more advanced beginner dancers wishing to refine their technique. Otherwise, try Friday evening where it will move a little faster and incorporate more centre practice and steps like turns and jumps.

Do I need to wear a leotard/tights/ballet shoes?
You do not have to wear traditional ballet attire, but can if you would like to do so. Form fitting activewear is recommended so that I can better assess technique as you dance, but if you would prefer other clothing please wear what will make you feel most comfortable. For footwear, socks or soft soled dance shoes (soft ballet shoes, jazz shoes, contemporary foot socks etc) are fine.

Can men do ballet?
All genders can do ballet!

I know ballet has different steps for feminine and masculine roles, will I have to do a particular one?
This class does not follow traditional gender restrictions; all traditionally gendered ballet steps are open to interpretation by any dancer. There will usually be multiple different options given with notes as to their gendered identity in the classical ballet vocabulary and participants are welcome to dance whichever option they wish.

Am I too old for ballet?
Definitely not, all ages are welcome to dance in this class.

Can I start class if I’m running late?
If you’re running late you can still join in with class as long as you are willing to warm up as the teacher directs if necessary.

Are there any performance opportunities?
A short repertoire course runs each year which concludes with a small, in studio performance! If there is interest in the future I would love to continue and expand on this.

balletRADICAL is committed to building a queer-inclusive community. We explicitly welcome trans, non-binary and gender diverse people, as well as asexual, aromantic, and other a-spec people as members of this community.

We acknowledge the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the lands on which we gather and pay our respects to Indigenous Elders past and present. Dance and other performing arts are affected by colonisation. We recognise that First Nations people have many rich dance traditions that have a been a part of their cultures for thousands of years, but these are often overlooked by a colonial focus on western art forms.
